Printed from an original piece of artwork based on a reference photo taken in Alaska, where Bald Eagles can be readily seen in the wild. A friend of mine captured a spectacular closeup of one of them and kindly allowed me to use it as a reference for this work. I wanted to see if I could create the intensity of the eagle’s stare as well as the texture of its feathers. Needless to say that using a 0.1mm nib was going to take a LONG TIME to do this, but I am really happy with the result.
My pointillism work is normally based on reference photos because I like to aim for a realistic result at the end. However, I don’t map the work out on a grid and sketch it out in light pencil first (although sometimes I think maybe I should!). I pick a starting point, which is normally an eye for animals and people, and work out from there. I find it helps me to quickly get a sense of whether the piece is working or not – and making a mistake with permanent black ink is exactly that… permanent!
The pictures in the gallery for this print include an illustration of what it may look like when framed and hung on the wall. A frame definitely sets the image off but, of course, you can put your stamp on it by matching the right frame for your room.
