Pointillism Gallery

I’m often told that I “must have the patience of a saint!” whenever someone looks closely at one of my pointillism drawings and see how I create them. And yes, in terms of how long it takes to create one of these, they are right.

It takes a long time, (and I mean a LONG time!) but it rarely feels like I’m being patient because I find it’s one of those all-engrossing processes where time can drift by without me noticing. It’s not something you can rush and I have always found the results very rewarding!

I use a 0.1mm nib, permanent ink, drawing pen and rarely map anything out in pencil before I start working on a piece. Normally, I will use a reference photo and start with a key focal point (such as an animal’s eye), make sure I have it as perfect as I can to make sure the image is working, then work my way out from there. It’s risky because you can’t just erase mistakes, but I find it helps me to capture the life and character of the subject from the very start of the project and maintain it throughout.
