Black & white pointillism print on paper

Category:

Description

Printed from the original piece of work created with black ink using a 0.1mm fine tipped drawing pen on A3 paper.

Packaged with a backboard for rigidity, ready for mounting in a frame of your choice.

The composition was based on a photo I took during a safari trip in South Africa where we were lucky enough to have spotted this Leopard chilling out in the shade. It hardly blinked an eye when we arrived in a Jeep, so I took my chance with the camera! I’m glad I did because the rest of the trip turned out to be pretty thin on the ground as far as the wildlife was concerned.  As a photographer, I am aware that patience is a virtue, but it’s not always possible to keep waiting and hoping when time is running out!

Covering an A3 sheet of paper with 0.1mm dots also takes patience and a LOT of time, but I have always enjoyed the challenge, the process and the results so much that it doesn’t feel like a chore.

My pointillism work is normally based on reference photos because I like to aim for a realistic result at the end.  However, I don’t map the work out on a grid and sketch it out in light pencil first (although sometimes I think maybe I should!).  I pick a starting point, which is normally an eye for animals and people, and work out from there.  I find it helps me to quickly get a sense of whether the piece is working or not – and making a mistake with permanent black ink is exactly that… permanent!

The pictures in the gallery for this print include an illustration of what it may look like when framed and hung on the wall.  A frame definitely sets the image off but, of course, you can put your stamp on it by matching the right frame for your room.
