Printed from the original piece of work created using a 0.1mm black ink drawing pen on paper. The original was based on reference photos taken during a tour in Alaska, where being in the right place at the right time can be a spectacular experience.

This is the fluke of a hump-back whale who had been giving us the runaround for 2 hours, breaching the surface in the far distance before finally being close enough for me to capture the shot that I used as the central reference for this piece of art.

Oh, what could have been…!  The whale was accompanied by its calf and, sadly, I never got into a position to be able to catch the two of them together.  Just to rub salt into the wound, 30 minutes after I took this reference photo the tour came to an end and, just as we all put our cameras away in preparation for the trip back to the dock, the calf breached big time!  20 feet in front of the boat, almost it’s full body came out of the water and none of us caught it!  The cameras came back out in time to catch the remains of the splash!  Oh well.  Maybe next time!

My pointillism work is normally based on reference photos because I like to aim for a realistic result at the end.  However, I don’t map the work out on a grid and sketch it out in light pencil first (although sometimes I think maybe I should!).  I pick a starting point, which is normally an eye for animals and people, and work out from there.  I find it helps me to quickly get a sense of whether the piece is working or not – and making a mistake with permanent black ink is exactly that… permanent!

The pictures in the gallery for this print include an illustration of what it may look like when framed and hung on the wall.  A frame definitely sets the image off but, of course, you can put your stamp on it by matching the right frame for your room.
